This is my final appeal, and I hope it will move you to support this cause. PLEASE buy these beautiful books and spread the word, by doing so you SUPPORT HISTORICAL MEMORY AND JUSTICE IN GUATEMALA…isn’t this VERY important?
Since I sent out my original appeal last September to some 2,200 contacts- individuals and organizations- only about 25 people have ordered and purchased books!?@X!? I thought, or at least hoped, that there would be a much greater response.
Below you’ll find the same appeal that I sent out in the fall, including how to order the books, but first let me explain more about the great importance of this cause. Please bear with me through this long email.
I’m selling the new, educational book, Rescatando Nuestra Memoria, to raise money for the production and printing of the interactive CD version, and for the continued coordination of the free distribution process in Guatemala. We are still $4,000+ short of reaching these goals. One way or another I will keep my promise to Guatemala, and I really hope that you can help. The rest is up to the Guatemalans, the many organizations and people that are part of this project, and they have committed to seeing that the book serves its purpose.
Through sales of my first book, Our Culture is Our Resistance, since 2004 I’ve sent over $10,000 to the Association for Justice and Reconciliation, AJR, in Guatemala (through the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee). The AJR is an association of victims and survivors who are the primary witnesses and co-plaintiffs in the “genocide” trials in Guatemala, cases that have been filed against two former generals/dictators and their high commands, the architects and executors of the scorched earth policy and the genocide that was directed overwhelmingly at maya-indigenous, civilian populations. Although I know that some of you already have this book- in came out in the fall of 2004- I am still hoping to sell more copies to raise more funds for the AJR. Justice for the generals, for their crimes against humanity, genocide, torture, etc.!
A little more about the educational book project: The CD will include the teachers guide and will go to universities, high schools, NGOs, communities, etc., throughout Guatemala. As with the book itself, and the accompanying teacher’s guide, the CD will be given FREE. Distribution of the books has already started- to offices in the capital- and the 5,000 copies of the teacher’s guide should be off the press within a month. More than 50 human rights, indigenous rights, mental health and community organizations, as well as educators associations, universities, foundations in Guatemala, and international NGOs, etc., are committed to distributing and putting these materials to use. In terms of funding, thankfully the ODHA- the Human Rights Office of the Archdiocese of Guatemala- recently gave us about $5,500 to help us along- in exchange for 1,000 books, and ProPaz gave $500 in exchange for 200 books. But as I say, we’re still $4,000+ short of our goal.
Again, I had hoped – and expected- that many, if not most, of the activists and Latin America focused NGOs in the US would buy books, as well as lovers of photography and others; that you would see the importance of this cause and would help disseminate the information. Maybe it’s the economy, who knows. I’m sure you all do see the importance of Historical Memory and Justice in Guatemala, and I know people have crazy-busy lives, like me…but only 25+ people buying books in 6 months??
If we are unable to raise the money from book sales and/or get more grants (and we seem to have exhausted that possibility), then I will once again dip into my savings to make sure the CD happens and that the distribution is well coordinated and is completed (this includes orientations and workshops for educators). In terms of the hundreds of books I have stored in my house in Denver, I guess I will bring/send most back to Guatemala and will send others to universities, public libraries, immigrant organizations, and other NGOs in the US.
Pasted below and attached is my original appeal, and also attached are the PDFs of the covers/jackets of the two books. I really hope you can help out by buying and promoting the books. If you would also like the appeal/information in Spanish, please let me know.
Mil gracias. A thousand thanks.
In solidarity,
Jonás Moller

I am pleased to announce the release of my new book:
Rescatando Nuestra Memoria: Represión, Refugio y Recuperación de las Poblaciones Desarraigadas por la Violencia en Guatemala
(Recovering Our Historical Memory: Repression, Refuge and Healing Experienced by Populations Uprooted by the Violence in Guatemala)
This photography based book is primarily an educational publication in Spanish about Guatemalan populations displaced by the internal armed conflict. This book is part of a much larger movement toward memory and healing for people who were uprooted by the violence. Through a network of Guatemalan and international NGOs, institutions, universities, associations of educators, and foundations, as well as several Guatemalan governmental offices, 19,000 soft cover copies of this book are being distributed for free in Guatemala to high schools, universities, libraries, communities, NGOs, etc. There will also be a CD version and an accompanying guide for teachers.
