GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - A centuries-old Christian festival in Guatemala is likely to be muted this year after the government asked revelers not to light traditional bonfires to avoid carbon emissions.
Guatemala's government says the bonfires lit for the Dec. 7 "Burn The Devil" celebrations emit in the capital Guatemala City alone the same amount of carbon dioxide as a million cars running their engines for one hour.
"We're not asking people to give up their tradition, but given the damage the environment has suffered we're suggesting they do something different like light a candle or throw a party," Environment Ministry spokeswoman Claudia Benavente said.
