“LESSONS FROM GUATEMALA: WHAT CAN BE LEARNED FROM THE 1954 COUP?” WITH TIMOTHY SMITH. Timothy Smith joins us to discuss his academic background and work on Guatemala after the coup and indigenous communities in the postwar era. We’ll also speak to him about his thoughts on the current Guatemalan administration and what to look for in the next four years.

His major fields of interest include Guatemala; historical ethnography; social movements; conflict and violence; identity and electoral politics. A Visiting Fellow at Harvard and Columbia University, Smith received his PhD in Anthropology from University at Albany, SUNY in 2004. Smith is the author of several books, including After the Coup: An Ethnographic Reframing of Guatemala 1954; Mayas in Postwar Guatemala: Harvest of Violence Revisited; and Runuk’ulen ri Q’atb’äl Tzij chi Tz’olöj Ya’/Autoridad y Gobierno Kaqchikel de Sololá.

Smith se une a nosotros para hablar de su vida académica y su trabajo sobre Guatemala después del golpe de Estado y las comunidades indígenas en la era de la posguerra.
